The days are getting shorter and the temperatures dropping, it can only mean one thing (in the dulcet northern tones of Jon Snow) Winter Is Coming.
Now, I’m no fan of winter, but I’m determined to embrace it this year, by throwing myself into the apple crumble (not literally), roaring log fires (again, not literally) and wrapping up warm for the season.
I was absolutely blown away by the response I got from my last style post, about fashionable breastfeeding essentials – thank you so much. As I said then a good pair of shoes can transform a mummsy outfit to magnificent. So expanding on that, here’s my timeline to the essential, mum friendly, footwear that will take you through to spring:
1. The end of summer.
You need something sturdier than your flip flops but it’s certainly not time to get booted yet. What you need is a loafer.
2. When it get’s abit chillier, it’s time for the low boot:
I’m obsessed with these guys. I think if the heel were any higher or any slimmer they would be too uncomfy to pound the pavements trying to get baby to nap. But as they are, they’re just perfect. High enough to give me extra height and make me look skinnier (YAY!) but low enough to wear everyday. Heel aside the rest of them is pretty fab too.
I adore New Look shoes – so stylish and so affordable. I had a pair similar to this when I was heavily pregnant last winter and I wore them death. They do wide fitting sizes so perfect for keeping those dreaded swollen feet and ankles toasty and dry.
3. When Winter’s well and truly here, get out the Long boot
So now, Winters definitely here and it’s time to get serious. In terms of coldness and sadly cost. I’ve tried cheap winter boots before and think it’s a false economy. This really is a case of splurge on the staples. It’s so worthwhile paying £100-150 and getting a good pair of dark flat leather boots that you can wear to death. If you go for a classic design they should last for at least a couple of winters, meaning cost per wear it’s totally justifiable.
4. When weather warnings sound… The Cold Weather Boot
When it’s time to call in the big guns then there’s only one boot manufacturer for it as far as I’m concerned and that’s Dubarry’s of Ireland. I own a pair of the Galways and I absolutely adore them. They’re as warm as uggs, as waterproof as wellies and as sturdy as an oxe and last forever. They’re expensive at £299 but worth every single penny. Unless you’re a farmer and out in them everyday you’ll probably never buy another pair. And if you are a farmer, you’ve probably got them already.
They do some slimmer styles now as well, which are a shade more stylish -but when the chips these really are a boot you can rely on. I’ve worn them climbing mountains, on skiing hols and even to muddy festivals. They do the job.
5. For all of A/W16. The Statement Boots
Ok, ok, not an essential. Knee high or even (gasp) thigh high boots are surprisingly wearable, totes on trend and are a practical and stylish way to jazz up any outfit. I also think they’re great for mums because they detract away from any, ahem, roundness in the tummy area. Still not convinced? Granted the leather shorts in the picture below are quite punchy, but imagine a nice tribal print skirt or pinafore dress with black tights? Or good old skinny jeans? I promise they’re so much more wearable than you first think.
Over the knee boots are wearable by anyone and I think look great with skirts or jeans, day or night. Asos and New Look do some really fashionable and affordable ones
NO need to stick to black. The chunky soul here will help the grey not get scuffed and dirty:
6. Ding Dong Merrily on High…It’s time for Party Heels
The best bit of winter is, of course, Christmas. And the best bit of Christmas is, of course, the parties. And for the parties you of course need to forget all about being practical and just go for what looks good!
Apart from the block heel on these means they don’t only look great but you can dance all night long in them too:
And these tinsel heels will definitely help you get in the Christmas spirit!
If you’ve been a very, very good girl this year…
7. And at the end of the day…These are the comfiest Slippers around
After a hard day out and about there’s nothing better than putting on some comfy slippers
You can’t beat an ugg for warm and comfy slippers
